Abstract The developers behind the South African Heritage Resources Information System, SAHRIS, recently founded a Nonprofit Organisation, OpenHeritage, with the aim of implementing similar systems in other developing countries. OpenHeritage is currently rolling out a national heritage system in Namibia, in collaboration with the National Heritage Council of Namibia (NHC) and the National Museum of Namibia. The system, intended for use by heritage managers, researchers, GLAMs and the public alike, fulfills three main functions. Firstly, it provides a platform for managing permit and declaration applications to the NHC. Included in this is a commenting system that facilitates public participation and increases transparency. Secondly, it acts as a national repository for declared national heritage sites and archive of survey reports by heritage practitioners. Thirdly, the system facilitates collections management for Namibian GLAMs, allowing for the digitisation of collections as well as object transfers between GLAMs. This presentation will explore the types of content that are being placed in the public domain for the first time in Namibia using the Creative Commons License, as part of the rollout of the national heritage system.
