A showcase of GLAM-WIKI collaborations
Overview of interesting and inspiring GLAM-WIKI projects from the past few years (and the near future!). These are presented in three different sessions on Friday and Saturday.

A short story about a successful GLAM partnership in Latin America (15 min)

The GLAM collaborations could be a successful experience for the movement, contributors, institutions and for the archive itself. Build a solid partnership, helps to keep editors improving the wikimedia projects, creating more articles on Wikipedia, releasing pictures or original documents on commons, even when the collaborations finished. At this moment, WMMX has the first wikipedian in residence in Latin America at Soumaya Museum, improving and creating articles about art. Also, we have the unique radio show on FM about Wikipedia.
GLAM-WIKI teams in the field: documenting seasonal customs with the National Museum of Ethnography (5 mins)

The 'Year of Folk Customs' project is built around small teams - consisting of Wikipedians, museum researchers and students - that travel to villages and towns where traditional folklore customs are still observed to document these events. A set of Wikipedia articles on surviving Polish folklore will be created and illustrated by video, photographs and interviews with residents.
Our GLAM-Wiki activities in 2015 - The national library & national archives of the Netherlands (15 min)

In this session the national library (KB) and national archives (NA) of the Netherlands will give an update on their current GLAM-wiki activities (Dutch only for now). Special attention for a project to describe all 1300 Dutch underground newspapers from WW2 (Dutch only for now) on Wikipedia and Wikidata. - Slides (PDF) (and on Slideshare)
A tale of two countries (5 mins)

In partnership with the Iziko Museums, the WikiAfrica project shared more multimedia about Cape Town onto Wikimedia Commons. The Wiki Loves Africa Cuisine contest also opened the opportunity for Ghana to share amazing food-related multimedia with the global world.
Museums' Linked Open Data publication with Wikidata (15 min)

PACKED vzw is a Belgian Centre of Expertise in Digital Heritage (non-profit). Currently we're running a project involving 7 museums (of contemporary and fine arts) whereby we're helping them to create persistent URI's for over 34.000 works of art they hold in their collections. Wikidata's Q-numbers have been used in one of the first project phases to identify artists having a Wikipedia page, and adding this info to the artwork record in the museum's system. We're now looking to not just enrich the museums' data, but also contribute it back to the Wiki community. Our aim is to submit the persistent URIs about these works of art to Wikidata. This would also allow the museums to publish Linked Open Data about their collection through an already existing infrastructure, while also enriching Wikipedia. The data would act as a placeholder on the work of art, eventually paving the way for actual content (not just data) contribution to Wikimedia. In this pitch session we want to a) explain our project proposal b) learn from Wikidata experienced users how we could go about handling this c) get to know Wikimedia-community people who want to work with us on realising this project (and yes, we have some funding).
GLAM in Chile: Official Speeches of Salvador Allende (5 mins)

In this session Marco Correa (WMCL) will present the “Official Speeches of Salvador Allende” project, launched in 2013, and developed by Wikimedia Chile in collaboration with the Salvador Allende Foundation (FSA). The project consists in the digitization and digital transcription in Wikisource of speeches from the former president Salvador Allende

Working as a Consortium-Level Wikipedian-in-Residence: Thoughts on Scaling Up local GLAM Initiatives (15 min)

Dorothy Howard, Wikipedian-in-residence at the Metropolitan New York Library Council, will present a case-study of her work as Wikipedian-in-residence since August, 2013. The residency is unique in that is is a collaboration with a library-services organization that provides technology and digitization services to around 280 libraries and archives in New York. The multi-institutional residency also has precedent in the National Library of Scotland WiR residency, and the York Museums Trust residency. This talk will discuss the special considerations for Wikipedians-in-residence that serve multiple institutions, present some of the most exciting GLAM collaborations that have come out of this project.

GLAM joys and sorrows: The Case for Malawi (5 mins)
Michael Phoya, Malawi GLAM work in Malawi is both rewarding and challenging, almost in equal measure. I will highlight the work, the successes, the challenges, and the present and future plans.
GLAM project between Wikimedians of Bulgaria & Numismatic Society "Philipopolis" (5 mins)
Vladislav Nedelev, Bulgaria As one of the first collaborations between user groups/chapters with collectors organizatios/societies I would like to present a different way to collaborate with them and to approach them. Why from the collaboration are benefiting both parties and how to connect and talk with them.
Expedition Wikipedia (15 min)

In 2011 the Dutch Foundation for Academic Heritage sought new ways to increase the online visibility of its members heritage collections. Inspired by their partner the Tropenmuseum, they chose The Wikipedia Way: To use Wikipedia and Wikimedia commons as a platform for the distribution of their knowledge, to donate images of their collections and to appoint a Wikipedian in Residence. For this organisation, and most of its members, this approach was new, experimental and controversial. It took several years to discuss and plan this idea, and to find funds. But in 2014 it all came through and project Expedition Wikipedia was launched. This spring the project ends and we are ready to evaluate.
In this presentation we will present our evaluation. We will especially look at the assumptions and expectations of the partners, as described in the project plan: how realistic were they? Did we reach our targets? And what outcomes were unexpected?
At the end of our presentation we hope to answer the most important question: would we do it again?

- Project Expedition Wikipedia (Dutch) (English)
- The Dutch Foundation for Academic Heritage is a cooperation of ten Dutch universities. University collections contain all types of GLAM-material, on a wide range of subjects, usually kept in a museum, the library or at the university departments.
Digital Preservation of Cultural Heritage in the Philippines (5 mins)

Similar to one in the Netherlands, the Cultural Heritage Mapping Project is generally focused on creating an all-inclusive repository of info, documenting as many Philippine cultural properties as possible. The collected data aims to function as a reliable reference for use by government, academia, and others if information is needed.
Development of wikikultura.net: public data of the Ministry of Culture of Republic of Albania in open data format (5 mins)

The platform www.wikikultura.net is created with MediaWiki, the same open source software used by Wikipedia. The scope of it is to publish all the public data of the Ministry of Culture in open data format and make them more accessible to the general public, the media and to any geek that wants to use the data for a web app, or a mobile app.

Science GLAM - lessons from two Wiki residences (15 min)

In 2014-15 I was Wikipedian in Residence at the Royal Society (the UK's National Academy for the Sciences), and then Cancer Research UK (CRUK), Europe's largest cancer research charity. Two different sets of lessons for what works and what doesn't when Wikimedia collaborates with science outside academia. I will also briefly give preliminary results from pieces of research that were done as part of the CRUK project.
Kumusha Takes Wiki: A different kind of collaboration (5 min)

Kumusha Takes Wiki project aimed at creating content about some pre-identified communities or topics in Africa. Each community or topic required a specific approach. This presentation will first show the selected communities in Côte d’Ivoire and then highlight the approach followed for working with the Writers and University communities.
Med-GLAM: Illustrating Wikipedia with pathology images (15 min)

In this session, we will present about how we re-defined the 'L' in 'GLAM' to include laboratories within its scope. The Department of Pathology, Calicut Medical College collaborated with the Centre for Internet and Society, a Wikimedia affiliate to share its unique collection of pathology images. Based on this experience, we will outline the details about building collaborations with a medical school, executing GLAM projects in a laboratory, categorizing medical images on Commons and illustrating them on medical articles.
Medical collaborations (working with translation organizations, government and other NGOs) (15 min)

WikiProject Med Foundation has been involvement with a number of collaborations over the years including with: translation organizations, governmental organizations, journals, universities and other websites. This will be a review of what we have been working on and what we have learned. Partnerships discussed will include: Translators Without Borders, World Health Organizations, UCSF, Open Medicine, and the NIH and AHRQ among others.
