From newbie to emancipated GLAM: what does it take?
Hosts
- Olaf Janssen GLAMwiki coordinator at Koninklijke Bibliotheek
- Jesse de Vos Projectleader cultural cooperation Wikimedia Nederland and former Wikipedian-in-Residence at the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision
Introduction
The early stages of working with Wikimedia can be a daunting process. Where do you begin, how do you initiate a glamwiki project, how do you give your idea momentum? What are the initial organizational, personal, financial requirements? How do you set up your GLAM up for success?
Once your project has taken off, how do you get your colleagues involved on the Wikimedia platforms? How do you spread wiki awareness and knowledge to co-workers in your organisation? How do you show your colleagues the opportunities and added value of working with Wikimedia? And what are guidelines for appropriate staff behaviour and cooperation with the community?
And once your glamwiki-project is rolling, how do you show its success? How do you measure impact and how do you report to higher management? What are the hard and soft performance indicators you can use to evaluate the added value of your project?
All good things come to an end, so your project (probably) will one day finish. But you would like to have a more permanent collaboration between your GLAM and Wikmedia. How can you do this? How do you arrange time, money and people for sustainable cooperation, either from within your GLAM, or from outside?
Aims of this session
This question-driven workshop will help you tackle some of the challenges your organization faces in the process of moving up the scale from a Wikimedia-newbie to a fully emancipated partner for the Wikimedia movement. The hosts have prepared a structure for this session (see above), but actually this is a session where you are welcome with actual challenges/problems/worries your GLAM is faced with during its evolution as a Wikimedia partner. We hope to have enough expertise & experience in the room to discuss solutions and share experiences.
Target audience
We would like to accommodate a variety of backgrounds, GLAM personnel from the very early stages of cooperating with Wikimedia, up to dedicated GLAMwiki coordinators. Also we would like to welcome Wikipedians and (future) Wikipedians-in-Residence to participate and get a better idea of the challenges that GLAMs face in different stages of cooperation.
